Growing up, I played a lot of video games, and my favorites were world building games like SimCity 2000 and Rollercoaster Tycoon. As a core millennial rapidly approaching middle age, I’m a sucker for the nostalgic vibes of those late 90s / early 2000s games. As I stared out at the city, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would look like in the style of those childhood memories. So here’s the idea: I’m going to make a giant isometric pixel-art map of New York City. And I’m going to use it as an excuse to push hard on the limits of the latest and greatest generative models and coding agents. Best case scenario, I’ll make something cool, and worst case scenario, I’ll learn a lot.

This shot required a crazy amount of math and planning! ???? We had find the right aircraft, location, and time. Then we had to calculate the proper focal length & sun angle for the PPC’s 4:1 power-off glide-slope without compromising safe exit altitude. This gave us an optimal Sun angle of about 25° (9:00am) for an exit altitude of 3,500ft at a distance of 1.5 miles from the camera; making me cover about 3 arc minutes of the sky. It was also very hard to line up because Andrew couldn’t see us until we eclipsed the disc, so it was up to me and the pilot (Jim Hamberlin) to use the opposition effect to align ourselves with his telescopes. It took six tries to line up the shot perfectly, but we finally got it after a little over an hour of circling. Huge thanks to everyone that helped us capture this historic, first-of-its-kind shot! ?
